The Market Tells You Everything — If You Watch Breadth, Not Headlines
Every evening after the NSE closes, thousands of traders open the same chart of the Nifty and ask the same question: “Is this market actually healthy?” The index alone can’t answer that. A 100-point rally carried by three heavyweight stocks and a 100-point rally carried by 800 advancing stocks look identical on a price chart — and behave completely differently the following week.
That difference is market breadth, and this page measures it for you — free, every trading day, with no login required. The dashboard above is EdgeLedger’s live Market Intelligence engine: the same breadth, sector rotation and institutional pressure analytics our journaling members use to decide when to press, when to hold, and when to step aside.
What this free NSE market breadth dashboard shows you
📊 Market Pulse & Participation
Advancing vs declining stocks, percentage of the universe above the 10/20/50-day moving averages, new 52-week highs and lows, India VIX and a single participation score that tells you instantly whether the rally is broad or hollow.
🏛️ Institutional Pressure Monitor
Automatic counting of distribution days (institutional selling) and accumulation days (institutional buying), rally-attempt tracking, and follow-through day confirmation — the classic O’Neil tape-reading framework, computed for the Indian market daily.
🔄 Sector Rotation & Leadership Scores
Every sector ranked daily by a weighted leadership score — relative strength vs the Nifty, internal breadth, new highs, volume expansion and screener passes — and classified as Leading, Emerging, Improving, Weakening or Lagging so rotation jumps out before it’s obvious on price.
🔍 Sector → Industry → Stock Drilldown
Click any sector to see its industry groups, relative-strength leaders, volume leaders, fresh breakouts and laggards — the bridge from “Defence is leading” to an actual tradable watchlist.
Why breadth beats headlines
Indices are capitalization-weighted, which means a handful of mega-caps can mask deterioration underneath. In nearly every major top, breadth peaked weeks or months before the index did: fewer stocks making new highs, fewer stocks holding their 50-day lines, distribution days quietly stacking up while the headlines stayed euphoric. The reverse happens at bottoms — breadth dries up, selling exhausts, accumulation days appear, and a follow-through day confirms the turn while sentiment is still bearish.
You don’t need predictions. You need a tape-measure. This dashboard is that tape-measure for NSE stocks — recomputed after every close, persisted as history, and visualized so a 30-second scan tells you the market’s true condition.
How serious traders use this page in 5 minutes a day
- Check the Market Pulse. Direction, participation score and breadth above the 20-SMA — is the environment risk-on or risk-off?
- Scan the Institutional Pressure Monitor. Distribution clusters mean tighten stops and cut position sizes; a follow-through day means the offense can come back on the field.
- Read the sector leaderboard. Which groups are Leading? Which just turned Emerging? Rank changes over 5 and 20 days expose rotation early.
- Drill into the strongest group. Industry leaders, volume surges and fresh breakouts become tomorrow’s watchlist.
- Journal the decision. EdgeLedger members log the trade with the market regime attached — so every post-trade review answers “was I fighting the tape?”
Frequently asked questions
What is market breadth and why does it matter?
Market breadth measures how many stocks are participating in a move, not just what the index did. When the Nifty rises but only a handful of heavyweight stocks are advancing, breadth is weak and the rally is fragile. When most stocks trade above their 20- and 50-day moving averages, breadth is strong and pullbacks are more likely to be bought. Breadth turns before price more often than not — which is why professionals watch it daily.
How is the EdgeLedger Market Intelligence dashboard updated?
Every NSE trading day after the close, EdgeLedger recomputes breadth, sector returns, relative strength versus the Nifty, volume ratios, new highs and lows, distribution and accumulation day counts, and a weighted leadership score for every sector and industry group. The dashboard you see is the persisted output of that daily computation — not delayed third-party snapshots.
What is a distribution day and a follow-through day?
A distribution day is a decline on higher volume than the prior session — a footprint of institutional selling. A cluster of four or more distribution days within ten sessions has historically preceded most meaningful corrections. A follow-through day is a strong gain on rising volume occurring on day four or later of a rally attempt, and it is one of the most reliable confirmations that a new uptrend has begun. The Institutional Pressure Monitor on this page tracks both automatically.
What is sector rotation and how do I trade it?
Money rarely leaves the market — it rotates. Capital flows out of extended leaders into emerging groups, and breadth improves in the new group before its price move becomes obvious. The dashboard ranks every sector daily by a weighted leadership score (relative performance, breadth, new highs, volume and screener passes), flags Emerging sectors early, and lets you drill from sector to industry to individual stocks.
